To avoid the entire issue of artist's names, I just file my CDs by the album's name. I maintain a music library on my computer, so I can easily find any CD that I need by going through my music library. When it comes to the names, I treat each name as a string. As an example I would file "Huey Lewis" in "H" followed by "Huey Lewis & The News". But I do disregard the opening "The" when it comes to group names. Also, when it comes to the name of acts I follow the rule that I use "&" if the group is permanent and "and" if it is temporary group. So I have "Simon & Garfunkel" but use "Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel" for the song "My Little Town" since that wasn't a permanent pairing. Thanks for the information on Classical Music, I've had an issue where all of my Classical Music is just in one genre named "Classical". The problem I have is that it doesn't really give me much information what the music actually is. I tried including the Style but that didn't tell me much. What I plan to do is to subdivide it by general type (such as Solo Piano, Concerto, Symphony, and Sonata).

Heinrich Schütz is also such a case were a HUGE chunck of his body of work was lost. Today only what he publised survived. Which is basically completely sacred music and none of it instrumental. But Schütz wrote instrumental and secular music, even operas. It's just that ALL of it is lost. Only his sacred vocal music survived. That's because in his day the works belonged to the noblemen he wrote them for and then they vanished in the turmoils of the 30 year war, burned with the private libraries they were stored it.

I’m a “beginner” musician (been playing guitar at home for a decade and learning classical piano for 2y) Idk I hear these claims and I don’t see why, I’ve never heard something from Bach that I liked more than the works of Chopin, Liszt and Grieg. Bach piano pieces all seem very similar and not that good and maybe I haven’t listened to the best of him. Does anyone have any recommendations as to what should I listen to?

Fun video! I’m 44 and just now trying to get more into classical music appreciation. What seasoned appreciators think of as annoying, I probably think of as a good entry point. Even I will say though, some of those pieces that you’ve heard in dozens of cartoons, movies or TV commercials Are a bit worn out, and I think maybe I’m at whatever the next step is right after realizing that. Lol. A.k.a. not too far along yet but looking forward to the journey

The comments about Haydn were very unfortunate; both inaccurate as to fact - the C major is the first of his two extant cello concertos, and erroneous in judgement - ‘minor classic’ (and passed over in a few seconds) is simply an unforgivable slur.

Schubert had a lot of music that wasn't really "lost", but many of the pieces that are now considered among his best were left unpublished at his death and were later discovered and performed decades later

In addition to what's in the video, I was quite surprised to find out that the Amen fugue sketch in Mozart's Requiem wasn't discovered until fairly recently, the 60s if I'm not mistaken. Which is also mind-blowing imo

  • @markw1331

Enjoyable video but the scores are "autograph" as in written in the composer's hand, and not "autographed" as in just signed by the composer. Another great re-discovery was Rossini's opera Il Viaggio a Reims. It was written for the coronation of King Charles 10 of France and required such a large cast of star singers that it was thought to be impractical to perform outside of grand ceremonial events. Some of the music was re-used and the rest was scattered. It was reconstructed in the 1970's and performed for only the 5th time in 1984. The plot is little more than an excuse for some spectacular music.

This was wonderful! Thanks, I learned a lot. I first heard the Haydn C maj. cello concerto played by the great Jacqueline du Pré in a broadcast concert in the 1960s. I will always remember the way she tore into those double stops in the opening solo. I've never heard such conviction in a musical artist! As for Vivaldi's "Gloria," one of my favorite musical works, I first listened to and and sang it during the 1960s. Little did I know that its first modern performance had been only a decade earlier. Regarding composers and their musical legacies, I have read that Corelli intended his works to be of value to future generations (I will have to confirm this). As for musical jokes, such as the long lost "Pesce D'Aprile," there's Mozart's "Ein musikalischer Spaß." I would love to see a video about humor in music!

My major hurdle isn't that I have difficulty sitting and appreciating a classical piece. It's that I have a hard time selecting a recording I want to give my attention to. It's a problem of curation. Say I want to listen to Bruce Springsteen. I type his name into Spotify and I can listen to the exact recordings of his 1982 album Nebraska. Say instead I want to listen to a piece from Chopin, I type his name into Spotify and thousands of different recordings from hundreds of orchestras and conductors using different arrangements and recording equipment, and there's live or there's in studio... It's a boggling selection. For the lay person who just wants to jump in feet first, there's precious little direction. You may come across a song you like by Debussy or Bartok or Vivaldi, but have no idea if you're interested in other performances from the Orchestra you've listened to. I'm sure there must be trusted individuals in the field whose opinions are well-regarded and point the initiated in the direction of the best recordings and such... But that is incredibly opaque to the likes of the novice. I think the audience for classical music is much larger than people would assume. It just lacks a commonly accepted guided entry point. Something beginner friendly, clearly denoted, and even... Visually consistent.

Classical music I don’t hate but do think is a bit overused… Elgar - Nimrod from the Enigma Variations. Lovely tune, very stirring, but of all the variations, this is the ONLY one that ever seems to get played and I live in the UK, England to be exact, same country as Sir Edward Elgar, and yet we never seem to hear any other of the Enigma Variations, it’s ALWAYS Nimrod! Why?! Beethoven’s 5th Symphony 1st Movement. The whole symphony is well worth a listen, there are three other perfectly good movements, but most of the time it’s just the first one which is so famous that practically everyone knows it even if they know nowt else about classical music! Spring from the Four Seasons - Vivaldi. I feel so sorry for Vivaldi. He composes this lovely bit of music, and what does it remind people of? Yep, that’s right, being on hold on the phone with some lying message telling you that “your call is important to us” when it clearly isn’t! See also Für Elise and Greensleeves for the same reason. With regard to your comments about Barber’s Adagio for Strings - I get that it’s not the most interesting piece of music ever composed, but there is a time and a place for “boring” tunes, which is late at night on Radio 3 or Classic FM so that you can nod off to them, so don’t discount boring classics, they can come in handy if you need zeds! 😂

Actually, I am one of the people who was cursed by the ninth, which was my American career, where I graduated college in Chicago on my ninth semester, then I went back to Korea, never to return. Maybe I was kicked out of college after graduation de facto.
